Holly Fulton for Simple

4 min read

Simple has teamed up with Scottish fashion designer Holly Fulton to create a Limited Edition Design Collection for their No.1 selling Kind To Skin Cleansing Wipes, making them the fashion week must-have beauty essential.

As well as being a leading figure on the Fashion Week circuit – London Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow –  Holly Fulton emphatically celebrates women through her eclectic aesthetic and bold, confident designs. As a Simple skincare user and an innate optimist who aims to capture authenticity, positivity and strength in all of her creations, the collaboration between Holly and Simple is a natural fit.

Here’s a wee Q&A with Holly that Simple did when the pair got together.

SIMPLE: WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER? DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THAT WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO BE?
Holly: No I wanted to be a vet originally but I’m too sentimental! I’ve always loved textiles though so I decided to do a
degree in womenswear and then I went on to do an MA in Fashion at the Royal College of Art in London. After that I went to work for Lanvin in Paris before coming back to London and starting my own label in 2009.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? WHAT SEPARATES THE LABEL FROM OTHERS?
The signature style for the label is a very graphic aesthetic. We are known for our use of hand-drawn prints,
luxurious materials and unusual fabrications to create products that are very bold yet feminine. We do a lot of hand-crafted pieces that we work on in the studio, we really try to create something unique for women so we consider every detail.

WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE TO DESIGN YOUR FASHION COLLECTIONS?
My design process works in quite a long-winded way but I always do a lot of drawing as a starting point for any collection. The initial research period is probably anywhere from around six weeks to two months – I draw hundreds of options but eventually edit that down which is one of the hardest processes to do! Then we start the process of working on the digital prints and I hand draw all the designs for those too, and in tandem we will have the embellishments and fabrications we are working with for each season coming in.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO WORK WITH SIMPLE?
As a designer we want to make our products available to as many people as possible and to appeal to all age ranges and stratas of society, the Simple team do this brilliantly and its something we really aspire to do with our product range.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE SIMPLE BRAND?Holly Fulton
Simple is a brand that I’ve known and loved for many years, having grown up with it. As a label we like to align ourselves with leaders in our field and Simple has a very strong reputation for being kind and authentic, with goto products that women can rely on.
TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN YOU DID FOR THE SIMPLE BRAND? WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT IT?
I’ve created two pack designs for the Simple team, one focusing very much on our signature monochromatic black and white palette, and the second one pink to encapsulate the positivity and femininity of Simple and also relating to our A/W15 collection which is based on the idea of fun and party girls. We wanted to create something that was strong, confident and bold.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LONDON FASHION WEEK?
The thing I love most is the adrenaline rush and buzz you get leading up to and before the show. Obviously I never actually see these shows so the minute before when all the models are lined up waiting to go on is the biggest overview I get of my vision and it’s the most positive feeling of achievement to see everything come together.

WHAT GETS YOU THROUGH THE BUILD UP TO YOUR SHOW?
I deal with the pressure beforehand through a combination of Rescue Remedy, white wine and sparkling water, in equal measure! I also rely on the patience and kindness of my friends and team.

HOW DO YOU DECOMPRESS AFTERWARDS? DO YOU TRY AND GO AWAY SOMEWHERE?
I have a hot bath, drink lots of champagne and watch as much normal TV as I can, anything I haven’t been able to watch in the run up to the show – like Bargain Hunt and The Antiques Roadshow!

WHAT ARE YOUR FASHION WEEK BEAUTY ESSENTIALS?
Red lipstick is my signature – I don’t feel ready to go to important events without it on. It just makes me feel better and gives me a sense of confidence as a woman. London Fashion Week can be a very testing time both in terms of workload and our skin – working long nights, being stressed out and eating a lot of things we shouldn’t can tend to really show on your skin, so anything that’s multi-functional, gentle on stressed skin and quick
