Valentine's fragrance - feisty or floral?

2 min read

Yay, it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend. That means love hearts, flowers, romantic meals, maybe proposals of marriage, and if not, well, at least a new perfume, right?!

But are you a feisty fragrance kinda gal, or do you prefer a more feminine, floral scent? We’ve picked four of each and given them a sniff – now all you have to do is get this blog post under the right nose!

Let’s start with feisty fragrances. Not a big floral fan? Like something with more of a bite in your fragrance, then how about Molton Brown’s Fiery Pink Pepper Eau de Toilette (£39 50ml, moltonbrown.co.uk). Notes of pink pepper, lemon, ginger, cedarwood, patchouli and oakmoss make this a vibrant, but sultry scent. Alien Essence Absolue EDP (£74 60ml refill bottle, thierrymugler.co.uk) is a floral, but has depths that take it to the more seductive side, then the feminine and fresh. Amber and vanilla, with Cashmeran wood and Jasmine Sambac create a warm, enveloping, scent with a kick!

Sexy Amber from Michael Kors (£77 100ml, stockists nationwide) has notes of sandalwood and musk, as well as amber of course, and is a deep, sexy, sultry fragrance. Finally, another floral that is dark! Opium was launched by Yves Saint Laurent in 1977; this new Black Opium (£44 30ml, yslbeauty.co.uk) is a modern take on a classic scent, utilising coffee bean, an unsual note that takes this to a darker place! Again jasmine sambac is the floral note, tempered by orange blossom, vanilla, cedar and patchouli, giving it a mysterious air.

If fresh florals are for you, then here’s four we reckon are pretty special. Clinique’s Happy in Bloom (£27 50ml, clinique.co.uk) is back in a gorgeous floral bottle for a limited time. It’s a fruity, fresh, uncomplicated floral fragrance, and we love it. Le Couvent Des Minimes Eau Aimable Cologne (or their Botanical Cologne of Love, £19 100ml, lescouventdesminimes.com) is like a lot of Referesher sweeties (remember them) crushed up and made into a scent. I can’t stop smelling it. I love it! It pays tribute to the devotions of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary with an original recipe that blends Orange Blossom, symbol of love and welcome, with five plants selected for their beneficial properties, in a generous fragrant water. So, the other notes here are Bergamot, Wild Rose, Nasturtium, Mandarin and Petitgrain.

Over at Marks and Spencer, their Autograph Crystal Peony EDP (£19.50 75ml, marksandspencer.com) is a delicate fragrance, like  fresh like morning dew, apparently. It has a white floral heart, and other notes include musk, sandalwood and vanilla, so it is a wee bit heady, but nothing too intoxicating! Finally, from Italy, Il Profumo’s Fleur De Bambu (£80 50ml, houseoffraser.co.uk). This is a very, very feminine fragrance, in homage to bamboo. It has a top note of Rica Rica flowers, a heart of bamboo and lotus flowers, and a base of Hedera Helix and Hedera Canariensis. It is ultra-feminine, and lovely.
