Avon and Refuge campaign against domestic violence

Something a bit more serious now – global beauty giant Avon has teamed up this week with the Refuge charity to highlight the shocking domestic violence statistics in the UK.

Together, today, they launched the Facebook App, 1in4women as part of a greater campaign to highlight the fact that 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.

For the last three years Refuge and Avon have worked together to raise awareness of domestic violence  and to support women suffering in silence.

Many people know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but few know that twice as many are affected by the scourge of domestic violence.

The Facebook App shows you what 1in4women could mean to your world. The 1in4women campaign calls on women to learn and recognise the signs of domestic violence so that they can support a friend who might be suffering now, or in the future.
With only 16 per cent of women reporting incidents to the police, the majority of domestic violence is suffered in silence.  So, awareness is vitally important. You can also put out a Tweet with the #1in4women hashtag

For more information you can go to the Avon website, or the Refuge website. Refuge started as a single house in Chiswick, West London in 1971 and has come a long way since then.

They’re the nation’s largest single provider of emergency accommodation and specialist support for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
On any given day, they support 1,600 women and children through their national network of refuges and community based support.
