Facial Suncare

If you are off on holiday soon, then don’t forget your sunscreen! It’s one of the most important things you can pack, so make room in your luggage for at least a couple of bottles of sun care to suit you.

I’ve popped another post on here looking at new, innovative, specific sunscreens, and one that covers mists and oils, and general body sunscreens. But this one is super-important – facial suncare.

Why would you use the best moisturiser on your face, and then go on holiday and slap sunscreen for the body all over it? Just don’t! You need to invest in a separate facial sunscreen. We should use SPF daily no matter what the weather, to protect our skin from the damaging UVA rays. So, some of these can be added to your daily routine.

Caudalie Anti-Wrinkle Face Suncare SPF50 (£19, Space NK) is just like a moisturiser. Use it over a serum, as part of your skincare routine. It will soothe, and block UVA and UVB rays while imparting hydration, nourishment and radiance. It contains a patented antioxidant complex and organic grape water, and is free of harmful chemicals, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, making it environmentally friendly for delicate marine ecosystems.

Clinique SPF30 Anti-WrinkleFace Cream (£18) is old school with all the usual ingredients you would expect from a sunscreen, including Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. It also contains Vitamin E and Sunflower Seed Cake, Barley Extract and Cucumber Fruit Extract – a unique complex that works at the moisture barrier function, helping to maintain healthy-looking skin.

This is another expensive one – if you use Tom Ford skincare, you might want to use this Tom Ford Face Protect SPF50 (£60, Harvey Nichols).  I don’t know what is in this other than ‘powerful antioxidants and soothing anti-irritants’, but it will protect from UVA and UVB rays, and is lightweight and fast-absorbing.

Boots Soltan Once Face 50+ Advanced 8hr (£10) has a five star UVA rating – the highest you can get. Again, I am not sure I would apply this just once in extreme heat, but that’s just me.

Clarins Mineral Sun Care Compact SPF30 (£27) is a tinted liquid formula. It provides suncare and promotes and even complexion. Part of Clarins new for 2019  modified suncare range, it contains a unique combination of Clarins’ complexes containing high-level filters and plant-based extracts to provide protection against UV rays and visible signs of photo-ageing. The new packaging has been created in partnership with Plastic Odyssey to included recycled materials and help fight against the problem of plastics.

Clinique Super City Block SPF40 (£19) is not a new product, but a much-loved one from Clinique. It’s sunscreen with a tint and offers high protection against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, and other aggressors thanks to antioxidants Vitamin E and Vitamin C. It’s sheer, oil-free, non-greasy, and works brilliantly as a primer under makeup.

Use Ultrasun SPF30 Anti-Ageing Very Sensitive Facial Sun Cream (£16, John Lewis) as an alternative to your regular moisturiser, and give your skin great protection. It contains Ectoin (active DNA and cell protection), a natual substance proven to prevent UVA-induced premature photo-ageing, and GSP-T, a powerful antioxidant complex that protects skin cells from oxidative stress. It goes on easily, sinks in quickly, and is perfect for daily use under makeup.
