Friday Fragrances for Mum

4 min read

We’re at the end of National Fragrance Week, so I’ve been looking at fragrances that you might want to splash out on (see what I did there) for mum, for Mother’s Day (March 31).

Fragrance is one of my very favourite things. I love beautiful smells! So, I’ve picked 10 of the best new and new-ish scents that are on counter at the moment, and hopefully one of them will work for mum!

1.FLOWER BY KENZO EAU DE VIE EDP, 30ml, £41, 50ml £59, THE PERFUME SHOP

Powerful and passionate, this loral fragrance has a musky signature with a touch of tonka bean absolute in the bass line. The top note is ginger, the heart is orange Blossom and bulgarian rose, and then there’s that tonka base. It’s a classic floral in a gorgeous bottle, and not too expensive

2. TOM FORD F*****G FABULOUS EDP, £218, HARVEY NICHOLS

Originally created as a fashion show invite, this is a hoot, right? And whose mum isn’t, well, f-ing fabulous? Key notes in this fierce scent include almond bitter oil, tonka resinoid, orris accord, cashmeran, leather accord, clary sage oil. It’s a delicate oriental leather, with fresh lavender in there as well. Make mum laugh if you can afford this one!

3. ELIZABETH ARDEN WHITE TEA VANILLA ORCHID EDT 100ML, £36

On sale from March 18, this is one of two new takes on White Tea. It’s a rich, warming, floral, with top notes of bergamot, lemon primofiore, quince and elemi oil. The heart is vanilla orchid, white tea, gardenia and dewy jasmin, and the base notes are vanilla essence, ambrette, orris, amberwood and musk.

4. GUERLAIN AQUA ALLEGORIA FLORA CHERRYSIA, £59

These Guerlain scents are worn as a spray or a splash, and the bottles are beautiful – and there are lots to choose from., This one is an irresistible fruity floral citrus scent. It’s pink, thanks to the cherry blossom accord, and it has gorgeous bergamot in there, as well as nashi pear and watermelon. There’s violet and white musk notes to give it that powdery dimension. It’s a perfect spring scent.

5. HERBAE PAR L’OCCITANE EDP, £59 50ml, £79 90ml

This new L’Occitane fragrance is based on, and inspired by, the wild grasses that grow in the heart of Provence, the botanical note of wild grasses is at the heart of this fragrance, mingled with explosive notes of bramble, wild rose and white nettle. It’s a green, resh floral, with notes of citrus, bergamot and pink pepper, as well as honey, cashmeran and musk. The bottle is lovely, and it comes in two sizes, with matching body items.

6. TOM FORD FOUGÈRE D’ARGENT EDP, £162, HARVEY NICHOLS

This stunning gender neutral scent is a classic Fougère – reinvented of course. It has mandarin, ginger and bergamot at the top, two French lavenders at the heart, blended with geranium, and a dry down of warm wood of akigalawood and
coumarin extracted from tonka bean. It’s a stunning scent, evocative of the 1970s – Tom Ford’s favourite era.

7. AERIN AEGEA BLOSSOM EDP, £98 50ML, £140 100ML, ESTEELAUDER.CO.UK

The Aegean Sea is surrounded by the scent of orange flowers from the shoes of Greece. This new luminous fragrance from Aerin Lauder combines verbena and Mediterranean florals of orange flower and neroli. It’s a sparkling scent with notes of Sicilian bergamot. There is Jasmine in there too,at the heart, making it a rounded floral. In the dry down, you’ll smells musk, vetiver and sandalwood for a warm out to this summery scent. And isn’t the bottle lovely?

8. TOM FORD LOST CHERRY EDP, £218 50ML

This oriental gourmand is a delicious and inspired fragrance. Yes, the first hit is like marzipan, but it has so much more to it than that. The key notes are black cherry, bitter almond oil, griotte syrup, Turkish rose, Peru balsam and roasted tonka. The cherry and almond notes are on the top, and hit you with that sweet scent. As well as Turkish rose, there’s jasmine sambac in the heart, which is surprisingly dark. The dry down is beautiful, with all those rich notes of sandalwood, vetiver, cedar, and more. The lovely pink bottle has a red heart, like a cherry turned inside out.

9. ESTEE LAUDER BEAUTIFUL BELLE EDP, £52, 30ML, £72 50ML, £100 100ML

This one is inspired by the modern bride, another floral oriental, and has top notes of lychee, rose petals, pear blossom, and mimosa. The heart is an orange flower and gardenia co-distillation, and tuberose petals add depth. The dry down is ambrox, orris absolute and a supple blush suede accord, with marzipan musk. The press notes for this are long and quite amusing at times – Ii’m not sure you have to be a bride to wear it, but that’s the target audience, I feel!

10. MADEMOISELLE ROCHAS COUTURE EDP, £38 30ML, £55 50ML, £75 90ML, FRAGRANCEDIRECT.CO.UK

This has a gorgeous bottle, with bow ribbon and everything. Classic old-school French perfume style, I love it. The new Rochas fragrance itself is very sparkling fresh, and is a rich, textured floral.  The top notes are pink pepper, pear and bergamot, the heart is orange blossom, lily of the valley and heliotrope, and the base is sandalwood, tonka bean and musk. New from March 18, this is a fairly simple scent that you can’t help enjoy.
