Four facial scrubs

2 min read

Scrubbing at your face doesn’t sound much fun, but a facial exfoliator should be part of your cleansing routine. There are so many types out there, from those that ape peels, to those that scrub gently, to those that give a deeper cleanse.

Here are four that I quite like, with varying prices, and actions and results.

Dirty Works Pore-fect Face Scrub (£5, Sainsbury’s) isn’t too hard on the scrub side, and has cooling Menthol in it, which awakens and purifies the skin. It contains Ylang Oil for moisture, and antioxidant-rich raspberry and cranberry extract. It’s a great weekly fix for scrubbing away dead, flaky skin and helping unblock the pores. A proper beauty bargain.

Dirty Works and Una Brennan Facial Scrubs

Una Brennan is on the most accomplished facialists and skincare specialists in the UK, with loads of celebrity clients, and over 15 yeasrs experience. Her Super Facialist range is an affordable line for everyone – combining natural extracts, high performance scientific ingredients and lovely scents. The Vitamin C+ Advanced anti ageing care has high-performance Vitamin C in it for a more youthful healthy glow, and a smoother, re-texturised skin appearance. The Vitamin C+ Gentle Daily Micro Polish Wash (£9.99, Boots) is a light gel texture, infused with micro-beads to softly remove dead skin cells. You can use it every day, and the antioxidant Ferulic Acid and Vitamins C and E will promote brighter looking skin.

Alpha H are one of my favourite luxury skincare brands. They’re not the cheapest, but their products are fab, and this Alpha-H Micro Cleanse with 12 % Glycolic Acid exfoliant (£36, cultbeauty.co.uk) is a great addition to your skincare routine. it clears the skin, pores and follicles of dead cells, blackheads and debris, and also smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles.

It contains cooling cucumber and refreshing mint to help with signs of stress and fatigue, and the glycolic acid removes imbedded impurities from the pores. It also cointains micro beads which exfoliate those dead skin cells and stimulate the skin.

Alpha H and Benefit Facial Scrubs

Use it twice a week, if your skintype is combination, dry or oily. Just massage it on, leave it for a few minutes, and then rinse. You might feel a slight tingle, but that’s normal. Once a weeks is enough if your skin is delicate or sensitive, and you should blend it with your regular cleanser.

Benefit are probably a better makeup brand than skincare brand, agreed? I don’t really go to them for skincare. But, I like their Refined Finish Facial Polish (£18.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk). It contains natural clay and seaweed extract, and it’s pretty gentle on the skin. I don’t think this is something for you if you have any skin issues, but if you are just looking for a simple scrub to use once or twice a week or more, then this is pretty good.
