It’s incredible to think that four decades ago, the term SPF had yet to be coined. We used reflectors, we sunbathed too much, and we used no skin protection at all. Now we know that unprotected exposure to UV rays exacerbates skn ageing, and causes cancer, we do all we can to keep the sun off our skin.

So, it’s no surprise that beauty companies are constantly searching for the next level in suncare, and Origins has found it with the new Dr Andrew Weil Mega-Defense line.

And its not just about the sun, but about keeping all the pollutants of the modern world from harming our skin.  New studies show that fossil fuel, deforestation and other human activities have led to 600 billion metric tons of extra CO2, the main pollutant warming the earth, in the atmosphere.

In many parts of the world, this has caused consumers to think twice before stepping outdoors, from downloading interactive pollution maps, and readily available phone apps.  Pollution is becoming an everyday consideration. In fact, the unanimous COP21 agreement signed by world leaders in December 2015 was a landmark accord that commits 196 countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

In an effort to create products designed for skin’s needs in our current world, Origins Skin Protection Research Team has conducted more than 15 years of research on the impact of environmental aggressors on skin. Findings show that pollution creates oxidative stress and harmful free radicals that cause inflammation and deteriorates the skin’s barrier. Studies have also shown alongside everyday pollution, microscopic airborne particulate matter can travel into the body through pores, and rapidly advancing skin’s ageing process. Over time, this causes sagging skin, along with rougher texture, discoloration and more prominent lines and winkles.

Now, in partnership with Dr. Andrew Weil, Origins has launched a pollution-defending collection. The Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Defense SPF 45 Advanced UV Defender and Barrier-Boosting Essence Oil.  The collection employs a three-tier system to protect skin from pollution, defend from harmful UVA/UVB rays and strengthen skin’s barrier to protect from future assault.

  • Protect: Shields skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays.
  • Defend: Defends against environmental hazards that trigger irritation by creating a barrier to protect skin.
  • Strengthen: Nourishes and strengthens skin’s barrier by building resilience.

You start with the Barrier-Boosting Essence Oil (£30)which is a light-weight, antioxidant-rich oil that helps defend skin while nourishing and strengthening skin’s barrier. Featuring Lady’s Thistle, a flower which has historically been used as a homeopathic remedy to soothe irritated skin.

Evening Primrose is a fast absorbing and layerable protective oil that adds hydration and soothing nourishment to assaulted skin, and Camellia, a tea oil used historically in China, is a source of omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, which provide rich moisture protection. So, apply 2-3 drops of this before your moisturiser.

Then it’s time for the Mega-Defense SPF 45 Advanced Daily UV Defender (£39) which features Opuntia Cactus. Discovered in Brazil, this powerful ingredient has adapted to hostile desert climates to create moisture reserves to maintain its vitality. The juicy, succulent plant triggers moisture, to help create a physical barrier to protect skin.
