5pm Staff New Look: Maureen

3 min read

January is the time for a new look.

I was ready for it. I’d been sick of my long drab locks for ages. My ends were dry, my roots were growing out, and I hadn’t had a trim in goodness knows how long.

It’s a new year and it’s time for a change.

Drastic cut

When considered a drastic cut, it’s important to make sure you’re in the right hands. I was confident I would be well looked after by Sarah Graham-McCombe at the recently opened Adee Phelan salon in Glasgow. Not only is Adee Phelan a name associated with some of the country’s biggest celebrities (Adee himself cut David Beckham’s hair) but Sarah won Colourist of the Year at the Scottish Health & Beauty Awards.

I told Sarah I fancied a chin length choppy bob but was open to suggestions. She decided on an asymmetrical cut, pulling my parting over to the other side to hide my fringe which was still growing out. She said not only would this style suit my face shape, it would take minimal effort to style in the morning, with just a blast of the hairdryer and a scrunching with product. Perfect for a low maintenance (read: lazy) kind of girl like myself.

For my colour, Sarah added a full head of highlights and lowlights along with an reddish colour which she said would give my hair a glossy sheen. I had been keen to get away from my blonde highlights for a while as they were not only difficult to maintain, but had left my hair dry and straw like.

The process started with Sarah lifting my ponytail and cutting it off with one snip. Yikes!

Goodbye long hair

The entire process, including the cut and different stages of colour, took four hours. Thankfully Adee Phelan is a very enjoyable place to spend the afternoon, with stylish decor, a pile of glossy magazines on hand, copious cups of tea and even a piano in the corner if you fancy playing a tune while waiting for your foils to set.

Space age

Sarah did my foils first before adding a gloss, cutting the layers then perfecting the cut when it was dried. She then used ghds to curl it slightly to create a tousled look.

The result………

I love it!

Tah dah!

New year new look

Yippee it’s the new me!

There is nothing else that can transform your style as dramatically as a new haircut.

It’s the perfect way to star the new year with a spring in your step and a confidence boost.

The going to the gym every day and learning another language can wait until later. For me, the best resolution is taking the a plunge on a brand new do.
