I get A LOT of products and I like to try to sometimes feature brands that are a bit different, or have a story to tell. SheaMoisture certainly does. It’s the legacy of the brand owner’s grandmother, Sofi Tucker.
Grandma Sofi was widowed at 19, and, to support her family, made and sold her handcrafted shea butter soaps and other creations in Sierra Leone. Sofi became known as a healer who shared the power of shea and African black soap with families throughout the countryside, and her products were sought after. She handed down her recipes to grandson Richelieu Dennis, SheaMoisture founder and CEO, who incorporated four generations of her wisdom into his hair and skin care. SheaMoisture collections continue to be made in culturally authentic ways, to preserve the efficacy, benefits and rich history.
The latest collection to launch into the UK is the Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Collection. This collection replenishes oils and provides a moisture barrier to protect hair and replenish dry, damaged and lacklustre locks – this is my kind of haircare!
It’s formulated with Manuka Honey, a natural humectant, Mafura Oil with essential fatty acids, Baobab Oil, and African Rock Fig – rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants. It smells delicious and it’s pretty good for a mid-priced range.
There are three products in the collection, and each one is £12.99.
The Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo is sulphate-free, gently cleanses, and infuses hair with intense moisture and shine-enhancing nutrients.
The Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner is a rinse-out conditioner, which detangles and hydrates – which is what we expect of a condoitioner, I guess.
The Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque, is a deep conditioning treatment that bathes hair in moisture and nutrients. It smoothes and fortifies follicles for stronger, healthier, frizz-free hair – and I am trying my hardest to remember to use a hair mask – particularly in the winter weather.
As with all SheaMoisture products, the Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil collection is colour-safe, cruelty-free, and do not contain parabens, sulphates, phthalates, mineral oil, gluten, synthetic fragrance or artificial colour. And it’s also good to know that your haircare regime is helping to banish poverty.
Certified organic Shea Butter in the collection is soured from 15 women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana through SheaMoisture’s purpose-driven Community Commerce business model, and 10 per cent of the sales support investments in these communities.
An ethical wage premium is paid co-ops members, and the brand aids in monitoring practices to ensure that the efficiency, health, profitability and quality of life is elevated for members of the co-ops.
