Smashbox NEW mascara and liner

3 min read

I love a mascara, and I love an eyeliner, so trialling these two new Smashbox products has been fun – and, I’m pleased to say, they’re both decent!

Mascaras are hit or a miss, right? There’s always some smudging involved, no matter what they say. Unless they are tubing mascaras – like Clinique’s Full-to-Flutter mascara, which forms little tubes round the lashes, and water takes it off.

So, being a BIG fan of that Clinique mascara, I was hesitant to give it up to try out the new Smashbox Super Fan Mascara (£17.50, Smashbox counters, smashbox.co.uk and boots.com). And I am pleased to report, it’s a good ‘un! So, according to Smashbox, this new mascara, thanks to a super brush lengthens and volumises.

Smashbox say: Get super standout, fanned-out lashes in seconds! This lengthening mascara amplifies your lashes with super volume, super length and super lift. To deliver a panoramic look on set, use this mascara as a wind machine for your lashes, creating buildable lift, length and volume that lasts for 12 hours straight. Our pros created this super-black formula to keep lashes looking fuller and thicker without any clumping, smudging, flaking or heaviness for the perfect wide-eyed look!  The 360° precision brush uses a double-bristle blend of firm bristles that load lashes with formula while the soft combs reach, style and reveal lashes you never even knew you had with each stroke. No lash is left behind— even those teeny-tiny top, bottom and hard-to-reach, hidden corner lashes.

My verdict: The brush is great, easy to use, and gets right into all the lashes. It’s super-flexible, which is so important in a mascara brush. It definitely lengthens, and volumises, and my lashes look super-long and full with it on. It doesn’t smudge much – there is a little bit of smudging after a day on, but that’s to be expected. I really do highly rate this mascara.

Alongisde the new mascara, Smashbox has launched their Always On Liquid Eye Liner (£19). I am pretty loyal to Clarins with this product – their liquid liner is amazing.

Smashbox say: A longwearing, waterproof eye liner made for control freaks. Easy to hold and featuring ergonomic grips along the barrel where your fingers can rest comfortably, Always On Liquid Eye Liner makes acing any look easy. Draw ultra-thin lines or build a dramatic, winged-out eye look like a pro thanks to the flexible, super-fine felt tip. The formula goes on smoothly and with the fluidity of a sharp point marker, giving you the maximum amount of high-pigment black color with every stroke. It has  superior staying power, the high pigment, waterproof formula lasts for 24 hours, so that rich black colour stays on—no fading, flaking or smudging.

My verdict: For the first few uses I was in love with this product. It went on beautifully, it was easy to use for lines, or wings, and it gave a great intense deep black line. It didn’t move all day. I wore it to a wedding and my eyemakeup did not budge (also thanks to a Smashbox Eyeshadow Primer). But then when I tried to use it a few days later, it seemed to h ave dried out a bit, and it was tough to apply, it dragged across the eye and there was little colour pay-off. Hmm. Not sure what’s happened here, whether it has dried out, but it has been closed properly, so it is a bit of a mystery. I will try again and hopefully will have better results.

This longwearing formula is a must for literally everyone. The ergonomic liner pen provides ultimate precision and total control for mistake-free application—letting your inner artist create infinite looks in varying degrees of drama. – Lori Taylor Davis, Smashbox Global Pro Lead Artist
