Autumn garden shades of beauty

5 min read

Autumn is surely the prettiest month, colour-wise. All those gorgeous browns, reds, and berry shades, and the last of the greens, as the plants and trees change and shed their leaves.

So, I decided to take some of those autumn colours in make-up form and shoot them in an autumn garden. Gorgeous greens, beautiful berries, brilliant browns, and ooh…orange!

These shades are perfect for autumn makeup, and berry and brown lips are bang on trend this year, in homage to the 1990s favourite lip shades.

Lets start with gorgeous greens, perfect for a different take on a smokey eye. Green represents the last of summer, heading into autumn.

1.Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Color Precision Glide Eye Liner in Emerald (£17) is a lovely precision liner, to add a hint of green to any eye makeup look. 2. New CID Cosmetics i-colour Long Wear Cream Eyeshadow in Moss (£15) is a gorgeous deep green creamy shadow in a mousse tecture that looks great, just slicked across your eye. 3. New CID Cosmetics i-smoulder Smokey Eye Pencil and Shadow in Olive (£18.50) is a great 2-in-1  – award-winning, in fact – it has a shadow and a liner, making eye makeup application super easy.

4. Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil in Smoky Emerald (£19). This is meant for hazel eyes, at night, says Charlotte, but I reckon you could use it even if your eyes are another colour, and whenever you want. Too many rules!  It’s a gorgeous creamy stick shadow, so easy to use. 5. Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Quagga (£14.50) from the Extinct collection, is a lovely two-toned green that mimics iridescent beetle wings. 6. MAC Eyeshadow in Bowlarama (£13.50) is a bright, gorgeous, green satin, from the It’s A Strike Collection. Team with brown and berry shades for a fabulously autumnal eye.

Brilliant browns are simple and easy to use – blend with greens and berry shades if you’re feeling brave!

1. Sara Hill Lip Gloss in Suede (£18) is wearable, neutral shade, full of lovely ingredients to moisturise your lips, and from a fab Scottish brand. 2. This lovely Clarins 4-Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Oud is only available at Harrods and Selfridges, but you can get it online. It is perfect for a gorgeous, deep, smoky eye with four lovely shades – from beige to black. Chocolate brown lips are on-trend this season. 3. Beautiful berries are bang-on trend in the beauty world this season – and there are tons to choose from.

Here are my super seven, starting with 1. Clinique’s Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Boom Pop (£16), a deep burgundy matte shade. 2. Illamasqua’s Demise Palette (£34) from their Extinct collection has a gorgeous burgundy berry shade, called Interitus, as well as the fabulous black blue Gimp, which has been brought back for this palette. Looks fabulous with berry shades. The Body Shop launch their 3. Matte Lip Liquid (£6) in November. Everyone is doing matte. These go on creamy and dry to a matte finish, There are 12 shades, a few of them berry shades, including this one, Tahiti Hibiscus. 4. Sara Hill’s Luxury Lipstick in Boysenberry (£17) is a deep, dark, shade that Candice from The Great British Bake Off would love. It’s a bold colour, so wear it with courage and sass! 5. This blackened cherrymatte eyeshadow is 300 Game (£13) from MAC’s It’s A Strike collection.

6. Next’s Perfect Lips Matte Lip Colour in Purple Haze (£8) is a great way to try the matte lip trend – it’s inexpensive, and an on-trend shade for this season. 7. Nails Inc Gel Effect All Fired Up polish (£15) in Nobel Street, a burnt raspberry, contains charcoal, which helps protect your nails against toxins and pollutants in the environment. This gorgeous colour is seasonal perfection.

Oooh…Orange. It’s a bold statement shade to wear. Easier on the lips, and easy on the nails, but more difficult on the eyes. But, Glasgow beauty brand Sara Hill, and the makeup artist behind it, don’t think so!

1.Nails Inc Gel Effect Nail Polish (£15) in Portland Square, tomato orange, has the charcoal, and is a brilliant bold leap into autumn. 2. Sara Hill Eyeshadow in Burnt Orange (£16) is bright, matte, orange. Over to Sara: “Matte Orange –  when would I wear that I hear you say! Well, orange is awesome, it does crazy things to the iris tones of your eyes. Like magic it intensifies eye colours and makes them POP!

3. Illamasqua Eyeshadow in Vapour (£16.50) is a matte tangerine that is lighter than the Sara Hill orange, great for blending with browns and other shades – perfect for a season that includes Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.  If the matte format is too much, then 4. Sara Hill’s Copper Glaze (£16) is a shimmer finish, in a golden copper orange. A sweep of this over the lids will add an autumnal feel to your makeup.

So, that’s my autumnal beauty round-up – what colours of autumn are your favourite?
