Cult Beauty - Paul Mitchell The Originals

2 min read

Whilst it’s always great to celebrate new launches in the beauty world- and there are more than enough of them to do that on this blog every week – there are some cult beauty products we just love to celebrate. Classics that have stood the test of time, maintained their best-selling status, and products that many of us couldn’t live without. So, let’s celebrate one every week!

PAUL MITCHELL THE ORIGINALS

Cult Beauty Paul Mitchell The Originals

Paul Mitchell haircare is probably the first premium haircare I ever used, and it remains my absolute firm favourite to this day, despite having tried and tested so many more in my beauty-writing career.

Back in 1980 the brand began with just three products – Shampoo One, Shampoo Two, and The Conditioner. These three products launched a global haircare empire, which today remains a salon favourite around the world, and has expanded to a lot more than three products.

But these three are still available, and are now called The Originals. They deserve cult beauty status for the very fact that they have succeeded, but also because, in particular The Conditioner, they were quite revolutionary in the haircare world.Paul Mitchell, 1980 style

The Conditioner is a leave-in product, one of the first of its kind, and still remains a best-seller today. Smoothing hair, reducing static, preventing dryness, gentle enough for coloured hair, it is a consumate all-rounder AND did you know that it is also wonderful for the skin?!

That’s thanks to the wonderful Hawaiian Awapuhi Ginger. Paul Mitchell also has an Awapuhi shampoo, and the Awapuhi Wild Ginger range also contains the oil, which I love.

Paul Mitchell lived in Hawaii in the 1970s, and in 1983 he and co-founder John Paul DeJoria created the self-sustaining, solar-powered awapuhi farm in Hawaii, which is where all of the awapuhi used in the products is still harvested today.

Paul Mitchell, born in Carnwath in Scotland, sadly died in 1989, and left his share of the business to his son, Angus, who runs the company with John Paul DeJoria today.

Shampoo One is a gentle wash, with Panthenol and wheat-derived conditioners which can be used everyday, and can be used on coloured hair. As with all PM products, it’s paraben free, and vegan.

Shampoo Two is for a deeper cleanse, a modern clarifying shampoo, which is colour safe, deeply cleanses, and actually helps minimise oil production in the hair with prolonged use.

These three products represent a wonderful haircare story from a boy from Scotland who had a great vision, and who created, with his friend, an amazing brand that revolutionised the industry.

Paul Mitchell products can be bought in salons, and for more information visit the website at paul-mitchell.co.uk, where there is also a much more in-depth history of the brand and Paul Mitchell himself.
