NEW Aveeno Skin Relief Handcream

2 min read

My whole year seems to have been about hand cream, thanks to a particularly nasty flare-up of psoriasis. Since February,  my hands,  and to a lesser extent my feet, have been cracked, broken, weeping, and sore. I was prescribed Aveeno by the doctors to soothe them, so I was delighted to try out a new Aveeno handcream recently.

Aveeno’s new Skin Relief Restore and Protect Hand Cream promises to instantly relieve very dry and chapped hands. I can say that it certainly has moisturised my hands brilliantly since using it. It also claims to intensely moisturise for 24 hours. Now, I have to reapply quite frequently, but I have to say, I haven’t felt them get anywhere near as dry in-between applications as I have with other creams.

This new Aveeno cream contains a unique Triple Oat Complex of finely-milled oatmeal, oat oil and oat essence to help repair, relieve and protect your hands.

Aveeno know that most of us, skin conditions aside, can get very dry and chapped hands in the winter. So, they have provided some useful tips from Independent Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr Sam Bunting, to help us look after our hands in the winter.

1. Minimise the damage from hand washing by always washing thoroughly with a moisturising hand wash and use tepid, rather than hot water. A 20 second rinse is more important than water temperature and will be kinder to the skin.

2. Seek out nourishing ingredients such as glycerin to ensure the skin’s outer layer is protected and hydrated.

3. When exposed to the elements, wear gloves to help prevent evaporation of water from skin due to low temperatures and chaffing winds.

4. Give your hands a weekly treat to keep them soft and supple. I recommend applying a thick layer of your favourite hand moisturiser to hands and covering them with cling film of plastic gloves for 10 minutes – the occlusion and heat help encourage the penetration of the moisturiser, delivering super-soft skin.

5. Combat the dry air that goes hand-in-hand with central heating by sleeping with a humidifier in your bedroom. Humectant moisturising agents, like glycerin, will function much better in this environment.
