NEW! YSL GLoss Volpute

2 min read

Who knew there was such a story behind YSL’s lip colours?! The latest in the Volupte range, launched this month, is Gloss Volupte.

But let’s go back to 2008, and the launch of the original Rouge Volupte, the first YSL lipstick to offer a creamy texture that is exceptionally shiny, with pure colour.

In 2011, YSL introduced Volpute Sheer Candy, a lip balm that gave moisture and the lips a tangy, colourful, sheer, shine.

In 2013, Rouge Volupte Shine, with its high concentration of soft waxes, simply melted in contact with your lips, giving them a shiny, protective veil.

And now, in 2014, Gloss Volupte, a gorgeous, creamy, never sticky, gloss formula that gives a lovely shiny colour. It has the cutest ever lip-shaped applicator, and it comes in three types of shine.

Choose from Scandalously Gold – 10 shimmering golden shades; Sinfully Iridescent – five sparking couture shades, enriched with tone-on-tone, pearlescent flecks, and Irresistibly Pure – nine sheer mirror-like shades which have no sparkles or flecks, for a sheer, lacquered look on the lips.

We caught up with YSL Beaute Creative Director of Make-up, Lloyd Simmonds for a chat about the new Gloss Volupte.

5PM: Is this the big come-back for gloss?

Lloyd Simmonds: The recent arrival of new generation formulas is enabling gloss to regain a prominent position in the make-up world. More sensual and more sensational than previous options, Gloss Volupte provides a new way to enjoy shiny lips with an unlimited sensation of freshness but without the inconvenience of greasiness or stickiness.

It offers women a new way to play with and wear gloss. Incredibly thinner and lighter than any other gloss, its formula contains the essence of a colour infused in an ultra-shiny, deliciously creamy texture.

So, you effectively liberate women who are intimidated by colour and bored with gloss!?

Perhaps! It’s not always easy for people to wear gorgeous Opium red, tuxedo black or flashy fuchsia on their lips. The subtlety of Gloss Volpute fulfills women’s desire to be sensual. They can play with the colours and types of shine – golden, iridescent or pure –and make them their own.

How did you create these 24 new shades?

There are many shades, it’s like a walk-in closet for lips! I wanted to create a range of iconic colours, so I drew my inspiration from the historic Saint Laurent colour codes: pale pink, bright fuchsia, coral, black… and a core collection with an extra hint of gold as a nod to the House legacy.

Which is your favourite shade?

The N° 49 Terriblement Fuchsia is so YSL! I also love the darker colours like N° 209 Smoking – it’s totally rock, very dramatic but somehow subtle on the lips.

How should Gloss Volupte be applied?

I like to apply it all over the lips. I start in the middle of the upper lip and glide out toward the edges and then repeat the gesture on the lower lip.
