Stressed skin can be a winter nghtmare. The weather, over indulgence, and the general pressures of life over this festive persiod can show themselves in our skin. Existing skin complaints like dermatitis and rosacea can flare up around this time.

S5 serum rosacea calmingA  friend of mine recently road-tested S5 Calm Serum – one of a range of Organic serums from S5, who have harneesed the survival properties from thje five most extreme ecostystems on the planet, namely The Arctic, The Desert, The Rainforest, The High Altitude Regions, and The Sea. The serums are Replenish, Calm, Illuminate, Purity and Renew, and can be used individually or blended together to cover a wide range of seasonal skin complaints.

Replenish combats Dry or scarred skin, drawing ingredients from the desert to reduce dryness and improve elasticity. Illuminate boost skin luminosity which is often lost in the winter. Alpine bioactives helps to even out skintone and Tibetan Kombuchka enhances radiance.

Purity Serum provides targeted breakout control, regulating oil levels and brining your skin back into balance. It contains Amazonian and Alpine bioactives.

Renew Serum (out soon) targets the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles using ingredients harnessed from the Arctic.

Calm Serum soothes redness and sensitivity, perfect for soothing skin that is prone to flushing due to changes in temperature over this period – the change form cold outdoors to hot indoors can bring this on. This serum draws from Marine bioactives to reduce inflammation. Sea Fennel Peptides reduce the appearance of skin flushing and redness, whilst Desert Glycoporteins help to hydrate and reduce ther roughness of dry skin.

My friend has rosacea – which is common in Scotland, thanks to our climate. Although her rosacea is quite severe, and she has had to take antibiotics to help with the bumps, as well as the redness and itching it can cause, she gave the S5 Calm Serum a rave review.

“My skin is definitely better with the antibiotics I was prescribed – the bumps are reducing and the redness is diminishing. However, I really don’t want to be taking them for very long. The s5 serum has been really good. It’s hydrated my skin, provides a lovely base and has definitely reduced redness.

“One drop provides enough coverage for the problem areas and just generally makes my skin look healthier and more radiant. I expected from the type of ingredients for it to smell a bit weird, but it’s actually quite nice and light!

“It doesn’t feel greasy or bitty, it glides on and sinks in and I’ve found that I don’t have to use quite so much moisturiser either – bonus! What I would say is that I don’t think it has a lasting effect, it doesn’t get me through the whole day, maybe I need to increase the amount of drops I use, or maybe it just takes time to properly work effectively, or maybe it’s just my make up!”

The S5 skin serums are a brilliant answer to stressed out skin. “There is a natural solution for every skin problem and it is just a matter of finding its equivalent in nature and tapping into exactly how the problem has been solved,” says Laura Rudoe, Founder and Head of Research for S5.

S5 Replenish, Illuminate, Calm and Purity Serums are £14.60 for 10ml, or £44  for 30ml,  available at s5skincare.com, and Selfridges
