Yardley London are known for their floral fragrances, and classic, single note scents – who hasn’t had a Yardley soap or something at some point? There have been over 150 fragrances launched by the House of Yardley since its inception in 1770. But this is the house’s very first premium fragrance – a floral chypre called Yardley Polaire.

The word Chypre is French for Cyprus. It was first used in perfumery by Francois Coty, who created an influential perfume of that name in 1917. It had a bergamot top note, classic floral heart, and a rich mossy base note. This is a modern, elegant chypre. Perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou looked into the typical characteristics of a floral chypre  to create a contemporary and sensual interpretation for Yardley.

Yardley Polaire has fresh, fruity green top notes of pear and freesia, with a spicy floral heart of rose, ginger and pink pepper, and a powdery base of patchouli and amber. It is a very easy, modern chypre to wear, even if you are normally not a fan!

Polaire is named after a 1920s French actress and singer, Emelie Marie Bouchaud, who went by the stage name, Polaire. The bottle is so ‘of the era’ – but very simple, with a lovely faceted lid. Perfect for The Great Gatsby style!

Yardley London is available at Boots, Lloyds, Morrisons, Sainsburys, independent chemists and online at yardleylondon.co.uk. Polaire is  £19.99, for 50ml EDT.
