Ghoulish MAC makeovers at the Edinburgh Dungeon!

Beauty fans – get down to the The Edinburgh Dungeon! It might seem a little odd, but M.A.C have teamed up with the capital’s scary tourist attraction to create dramatic, scary looks for the attractions’ new look. Independent make-up artist Sam Norman – who has worked on projects including Snow White and The Huntsman and Pirates of The Caribbean-On Stranger Tides – has teamed up with the M.A.C. Pro Team and together applied their creative vision to bring the dungeon characters to life.

‘The old make-up look was very dramatic – almost theatrical,” explains Sam. “My task was to use my experience to bring a film-like quality to the make-up. Subtlety and authenticity were key to make the whole experience more thrilling. When seen alongside the amazing costumes, and brought to life by the fantastic actors, it means the experience feels like you’re stepping onto the set of the coolest, scariest and alluring modern film.

With a witty new script, new costumes and state of the art special effects, the most sinister characters from Scotland’s history now loom even larger with gripping storytelling on 360º theatrical sets – so where better to spend the May Day holiday, than checking out the makeup (and being scared!) in The Edinburgh Dungeon!?

“Our new look takes inspiration from on-screen characters such as those played by Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp,” says Johnny Campbell, the Dungeon’s Gerneral Manager. “M.A.C. are famous for their ground-breaking work for the silver screen so they were the ideal brand to help us move away from the ‘horror’ look of the past to deliver a filmic experience.

The M.A.C. Pro Team and the Edinburgh Dungeon ran exclusive makeup training days in Germany and London Kensington studios where Dungeon actors got involved to learn and play with new make-up creations. To see how they did it have a look at the HOW TO videos.

“It’s been a brilliant collaboration,” says Dean Rudd of M.A.C Cosmetics. “Not many people know this but M.A.C has a range of PRO products that are designed primarily for make-up artists. This small but brilliant range of products is perfect for creating the more sinister looks for the Dungeon. The actors breathe life into the various characters they play, whilst still adding a little bit of humour. Seeing the characters in their new costumes and new make-up and wigs is quite creepy. We all love a good scare and the Dungeons are now doing it so well.
