Cover with Cover FX

Continuing again with a skincare theme, I am happy to report, after the disappointment of Nanoblur (see my review), that I really liked Cover FX. Another Canadian brand, like Nanoblur, Cover FX was created in 1985 by corrective makeup specialist Lee Graff (pictured left) and leading dermatologist Dr Neil Shear to help people with acne, rosacea, scarring and other imperfections.

The brand has just launched into Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh, its first counter in Scotland. I met Lee Graff last week, and had my makeup done at the counter. I was a bit scared, as it seemed to be offering a lot more coverage than I normally wear, but the different formulas of foundation are many (far too many to list here!) and with over 30 shades, you will find the perfect one. I learned that my skin had a neutral tone, whilst most foundations are yellow or pink based, so it’s no surprise I’ve found it hard to find the correct colour all my life!

I was matched to E10 in the Natural FX Water Based Foundation (£37) and E20 in the Total Coverage Cream Foundation (£37). I also had a blend of two primers applied. Brightening Foundation Primer SPF50 (£44) and Nourishing Foundation Primer and Anti-Aging Serum (£44), then set with Translucent Setting Powder (£29). It was the first time I had used powder in years, and I do prefer a dewy look, but  my skin felt amazing, so I went with it!

The idea behind creating the makeup was because, after spending years mixing makeup to create the right shades, I wanted just thought I really ought to try and create my own,” said Lee. “I also wanted something with no parabens, no oils, and good SPF in it. Our foundations are also highly pigmented, containing 40% pigment compared to around 20% in most other brands. And we use Derma Fix technology – which means the foundation binds to itself, making it buildable, and able to cover scars, discolouration etc, but do it naturally.”

The product does look amazingly natural, and it doesn’t move. A brisk walk home in a coat too heavy for the mild Autumn day brought on a slight perspiration, but it didn’t smudge or move! The buildability of the makeup is brilliant, Angelina Jolie uses it to cover her tattoos in movies, so you can get an idea of how much coverage it can give. But, if you use a little, and blend it, then you can build where you need more, instead of using concealer.

If you can, get to Harvey Nichols and investigate, it’s worth it.
