Has your make-up got the X Factor?

4 min read

I’m no great fan of the X Factor, but I love these images of Diana Vickers who was on the show in 2008 and got to the semi-finals and was probably more noted for her quirky style than her singing.

Diana Vickers for Collection 2000 is a collaboration for Autumn Winter, and the fantastic looks were created for Diana by the brand’s makeup artist, Athena Skouvakis.

“I grew up with Collection 2000 which has always been one of my favourite brands.  I love experimenting with makeup and Collection 2000’s incredible range of fashionable, colourful products allows me to ‘play’ to my heart’s content!,” says Diana.

I thought you might like to know exactly how to create each look yourself with the products which are available as of today, so we asked Athena to run through each look.

Colour Pop

This look is all about strong lips and nails so it is important to keep the rest of the makeup as simple as possible.  Apply a thin layer of lightweight, radiant foundation to the skin, blend well to create a natural, dewy base and then highlight the cheekbones with a light, shimmery blusher. Apply a slick of volumising mascara to the lashes and then a colour-popping shade of lipstick to the lips. Complete the look by painting the nails in a contrasting bright.

Athena used: NEW Collection 2000 Colour Match Foundation, Shimmer Shades Blusher, NEW Pump Up the Volume Mascara, Lasting Colour Lipstick in Pink Shock and Lasting Colour Nails in Geranium.

Top Tip: Ensure plenty of product is on the nail varnish brush for a smooth finish

Iconic Eyes

Diana’s all-time, can’t-live-without beauty product is mascara as she likes to have beautifully defined eyes at all times. To create this look, keep the rest of the makeup very simple and concentrate on the eyes, defining the upper and lower lids with soft kohl pencil in either classic black or an aqua blue, for a more contemporary look. Smudge the kohl pencil with a cotton bud to avoid harsh lines and then apply lashings of mascara. Choose a curved wand to curl the lashes and create a wide-eyed effect.

Athena used: NEW Pump Up the Volume Mascara, NEW Intense Kohl Pencils and Shimmer Shades.

Top Tip: Wipe excess product from your mascara wand to avoid clumping.

Smokey Eyes

Creating sexy smokey eyes is top of every fashionista’s wishlist and is one of Diana’s signature looks. As this is more of an evening look, choose a foundation with airbrushed perfection for flawless skin. Use three complementary shades of eye shadow to create the smokey eye effect, first blending the medium shade over the whole eyelid and then brushing the dark shade from the outer corner and blending to the centre of the lid.  For more impact, sweep along the lower lash line too. Use the lightest shade to highlight the brown bone and then apply two or three layers of mascara for a sultry finish.  Opt for a slick of lipgloss for the lips rather that a strong shade of lipstick so the eyes do the talking!

Athena used: NEW Collection 2000 Smokey Eye Palette, NEW Pump Up the Volume Mascara, Perfect Finish Foundation and Lock n Hold Lipgloss.

Top Tip: Collection 2000 Smokey Eyes Palette comes complete with a cream which you can apply to the inner corner of the eye to brighten.

Christmas Sparkle

Every girl’s makeup repertoire should include a perfect party look and for Diana, I created a look which balanced sparkle with sophistication.  Use a lightly iridescent bronzing powder with a big brush to create a pretty glow for the skin and then concentrate on the eyes. Create a base for the eyes using a shadow which complements the glitter and then apply sparkles a little at a time.  Remember to build up gradually to avoid looking like a Christmas tree!  The party season is the best time to experiment with false lashes so once your look is complete, carefully apply these for a flirty finish.

Athena used: NEW Collection 2000 False Eye Lashes, Glam Crystals and Mosaic Glow.

Top Tip: Apply base last so that excess glitter can be easily wiped away.
