New Look for Boots' Soltan range

3 min read

Well, summer finally arrived at the weekend and then some! Wow, it was hot! If you are suffering from a bit too much of the sun this morning, then I hope you have some aftersun.

I was liberally applying mine last night after turning a little pink in the garden!

Sunscreen and aftersun should be bathroom cupboard staples in this country – that may sound daft, but you really should wear some sort of SPF every day on your face to avoid the UVA rays, which are the ageing rays of the sun, and the UVB rays – the ones that can burn.

Boots have completely relaunched their Soltan range for Summer 2011, listening to customer advice and changing key things. They have developed a new ‘upside down’ bottle shape to help customers get every last drop of sun protection out, and brought all the important product information to the front of the pack.

Mike Brown, Boots Suncare Senior Advisor also wants us to become more au fait with the UVA rays which are the most worrying. “SPF only measures protection against burning which comes mainly from UVB rays. But around 95 per cent of UV light is UVA and its rays penetrate more deeply into the skin than UVB, causing long-term skin damage that your body does not fully repair, ” Mike says

“There are no health benefits associated with UVA rays but there is a growing belief that they are associated with certain harmful effects including skin cancer.

“The UVA Star Rating System ranks levels of UVA protection; since 2004 each and every product in the Soltan range has been awarded five out of five stars – the highest level of UVA protection. So you can rest assured that you and your family are getting the best available protection.”

The Soltan Once Invisble Pump Spray comes in SPF15 or SPF25 (£17.49) – and once it’s on, it gives up to eight hours protection. I tend to panic about any suntan spray/lotion/cream that says you only need to apply it once. If you’re next to me on the beach you will hear my spray skooshing at least every 20 minutes!

But I have tried this, and it does work – not if you are constantly in and out of the sea or pool of course, but if you are in the garden, or just on the beach. When you apply it it dries to the touch, and doesn’t feel sticky or uncomfortable. There is also a face version, in SPF30 for £9.99.

The new range includes a Once Kids Waterplay SPF30 or 50+ as well that has up  to three hours water resistance – which is four times the standard water resistance levels on the market – whilst also providing up to six hours SPF protection.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast seems to indicate our sunscreens will be back in the cupboards for another week at least, but when the sun comes out again, reach for them first, and hopefully not too much of the aftersun will be required!
