Keep Young And Beautiful

Elemis and Clarins are two of the big names in beauty to have just launched dedicated lines for teenagers and twentysomethings. It got me thinking – when did you start bothering about your skin?

I can’t recall ever having a ‘skincare routine’ until I was well into my 20’s, despite studying at beauty school aged 17 (it’s no wonder I dropped out after a year!) I remember my mum taking me into town to buy a certain three-step cleanse, tone and moisturise package from a well-known big brand, but it was too harsh for my skin. Prior to that I just used any old thing that came free on a magazine. In my 20’s it was baby wipes and any old moisturiser I could get!

All that changed when I became a Beauty Editor, and now my skincare routine consists of more products than is every truly necessary. But if I was a teenager or in my 20’s now, I’d be much more savvy, with these heavyweights offering me a full skincare range for my age group.

Elemis freshskin launched last month. Created by the company’s Director of Product & Treatment Development, Noella Gabriel, it was inspired by her three nieces. She believes the teens to mid 20’s are trapped in an ‘inbetweener age group’. Clearly there was a gap in the market. The range has eight products in total, from Make Up Away Cleansing Wipes, to Day and Night Moisturisers, with masks, eye balms, lip balms and everything else in between. The prices range from £8 to £22. It’s more expensive than anything an average teenager can afford, but is your skin worth the extra care at this age to save the huge skincare routines at my age, I wonder?!

Clarins Daily Energizers range is for the  18 to late 20’s age group. It has five products, for ‘three quick effective steps’. I love the idea of the Energizer Wake-up Booster (£15), a liquid gel that claims to freshen, tone and hydrate skin first thing. It contains toning Green Coffee, softening Redcurrant and radiance boosting White Tea and Cocoa. I was tempted to use this despite being way out of its age range!

Other products include a Daily Energizer Moisturiser (£19.50) in a Gel, Cream-gel or Lotion format, and a Daily Energizer Cleansing Gel (£10.50). Again, it’s not cheap. But if you want to look after your skin, it’s perhaps a good investment. I guess only time will tell…
